Somatic Integration
My job as your practitioner is to be an advocate for your body, especially for your autonomic nervous system. My practice is client centered. I specialize in educating people on how to shift their nervous system states from the powerful survival responses of Flight, Fight and Freeze to the equally powerful restoration states of Rest, Restore and Relate. I think of this as shifting from Survival to "Thrival." When the body is at ease rather than being stuck in a survival mode state of stress a person has genuine options and can make real choices. There is an opportunity to respond rather than react. In this state of physical balance the body is able to recover from injury, infection and illness, and the mind is able to relate to experiences with empathy, humor and creativity.
Many of the people who come to my practice are overwhelmed with intense symptoms that severely compromise their lives. Some have already been on heroic medical journeys yet have found little lasting relief. This is almost always because their nervous systems are dysregulated. Until the autonomic nervous system is brought back into a regulated state of homeostasis the body's innate healing capacities remain hijacked by powerful survival stress responses. This causes a myriad of symptoms including depression, anxiety, fatigue, digestive issues and chronic pain.
The ability to recognize and move out of survival states and into relational states is the key to physical and mental health. The Polyvagal Theory developed by Dr. Stephen Porges explains the underlying nervous system states that run our perceptions and sense of safety. The modalities in which I have trained, some of which are ancient and esoteric, all specialize in accessing and cultivating the relational embodied state of regulation. Being regulated allows the body to heal and the mind to perceive accurately and access a sense of safety, connection, and agency. It is the basis for resilience.
I call my practice’s modality Somatic Integration. It is an integrative approach to the clinical application of Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory. I use the techniques of the hands-on modalities and meditation practices that facilitated my own recovery from years of debilitating pain and dysregulation. I seamlessly integrate Advanced Rolfing Structural Integration, Somatic Experiencing, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, SourcePoint Therapy, The Safe and Sound Protocol and embodied meditation from several traditional lineages into my practice. These modalities work with the underlying patterns that support regulation and capacity by working with awareness, bodily sensation, and the breath. This integrative embodied approach gets at the root of autonomic nervous system dysregulation and disassociation and supports regulation and health.
